Pattern release: Verglas

Thank you all, so much, for your lovely email messages and comments yesterday on the changes to CustomFit. I appreciate all of you more than you know. Today, I have some more happiness to share with you – a new sweater! Please say hello to Verglas:

Sometimes we all just need a warm hug. Verglas is a snuggly sweatshirt of a sweater, with a sporty tube neckline and fun cables. I’ve been wanting something like this for ages – the kind of thing I can throw on with jeans and hiking boots, the kind of thing I can wear when I’m working in my studio in the winter.

When Jen Spirit Trail Fiberworks sent me her newest yarn, Zalti, I knew I’d found the right yarn for this idea. I played around with some of my favorite cables, fiddled with the neckline a bit, and haven’t looked back.

Verglas is worked with cables on the sleeves and front, with a plain Stockinette back to accommodate a little bit of waist shaping. Locating the waist shaping on the back only keeps the sweater from feeling too stiff and boxy, while avoiding a super-fitted look – which matches the sweatshirt I was envisioning.

The Zalti is soft, sproingy, and such a pleasure to knit with. It plumps up perfectly into these cables, and honestly I can’t imagine a more soothing thing to put on for a crisp, cold day. You can order the yarn for Verglas, along with a copy of the pattern, in a kit directly from Jen at Spirit Trail Fiberworks: Click here to order.

Beth has absconded with the sample (it’s okay, she’s super-knitworthy and honestly, the Vortex is a little light in color for my personal taste), so I’m already plotting another one for myself. Maybe in Black Cherry? Shadow? Glacier? What do you think?

One further note, on fit: I decided to shoot this sample, which was sized for me, on my friend Beth. She and I have very similar shoulders, but she’s smaller through the body than I am. This gives you a bit of a sense of what the “oversized” fit in the site might look like: on Beth, the Verglas sample is a bit larger than the relaxed fit would be – and just a bit smaller than the “oversized” fit would be.

Of course, it’s hard to see motion with still photos, so Beth (because she is made of awesome) gave us all a dancing montage:

You can make your own version of Verglas right on CustomFit – maybe in a few weeks, when the Deep Winter sweater KAL starts? Either way, I hope you love it as much as I do!

  1. If it were me, I’d probably go for Glacier, but I’m loving the Black Cherry too. Love those cables!

  2. Glacier, because you look greatin blue, and I think the patterns would show up better than in the Black Cherry. But I LOVE the Black Cherry color. It’s a great design!

  3. Love, love this pattern. I might even not whine about sewing pieces together instead of top down. I have some Madtosh 80/100/10 worsted in “Paper” color that might be perfect for this. I am under self =imposed stash busting or I would buy the wonderful suggested yarn. Thanks, Amy, for your great talent.

  4. Yippee, I’ve been waiting for this, thank you.
