Seguin is inspired, like so many of my designs, by the beautiful place I grew up on the coast of Maine. I spent a good chunk of my childhood on the water with my grandpa and uncles, and will go out on any kind of boat, any time. But if I get to choose, there’s no lovelier place in the world than Seguin Island on a brisk summer day. Located offshore in Midcoast Maine, Seguin is home to Maine’s tallest active light station and can be visited either by ferry/charter, or by twisting the arm of one’s nearest uncle, depending. Even in summertime, the waters off the coast of Maine can be chilly – so a sweater is always advised.

This kicky pullover is simple to knit but engaging too, thanks to the thin stripes that adorn the sweater’s body. A simple scoop neck, 1×1 ribbed trim, and contrast-color hem and sleeve cuffs complete a look that’s unfussy and timeless. I thoroughly recommend it for all boating excursions and any time the air warrants just a bit of warmth.

Blue Sky Alpacas “Royal” certainly lives up to its name. This fingering-weight, luscious alpaca is light, warm, and smoother than anything you’ve ever felt in your fingers. It elevates this simple pullover into an incredible luxury.
I highly recommend it, but Seguin will also work in many other materials and gauges, depending on the look you’d like to achieve. To get a sweater similar to the one shown, choose a lofty yarn with some halo or bloom that knits up into a light fabric at the recommended gauge and comes in a subdued color palette. You’ll need ap- proximately 586 (630, 685, 732, 782, 827, 880, 942, 1000, 1056, 1134, 1228) yds/535 (576, 626, 669, 714, 755, 804, 860, 913, 964, 1036, 1121)m MC and 293 (316, 343, 367, 392, 414, 441, 472, 501, 529, 567, 614)yds/268 (288, 313, 335, 378, 402, 431, 457, 483, 518, 561)m CC.

This sweater offers great options for all body types. As written, the scoop neckline and long sleeves flatter proportional figures. The stripe patterning camouflages the tummy and the light solid color upper torso highlights the bust. Bottom-heavy shapes might consider shortening the sweater or sleeves slightly; top- heavy shapes might consider lengthening the sweater, using the brighter color as their CC, and/or narrowing the neckline.

Vertical darts enable easy customization to fit your needs. Should you desire less waist shaping than specified, either omit the shaping rows entirely, or omit/reduce only the shaping on the front of the sweater. Bustier women can work more increases on the front of the sweater, and not in the back. Extra stitches should be decreased into the neckline.

As with all patterns, compare the schematic against your own measurements and make alterations as necessary.

Seguin may be purchased in one of two ways:

  • As a standard pattern for $7.00. This is a pattern very much like any of my others; it includes complete instructions for all 12 sizes, plus modification advice and a detailed schematic.
  • Via CustomFit. CustomFit is a custom sweater pattern generator I’ve written. You enter in your body measurements (once), and swatch information (whenever you like), and can choose from a selection of designs. CustomFit will then build you a custom version of that sweater, in your gauge, for your body. Seguin is built directly into the CustomFit site, and can be found here.
